PILEWSKI IN DISTRICT OF POZNAN

    Its impossible to believe in the theory, that only Kazimierz Pilewski escaped alone from German persecution from Prussia into Poland in the days of her partitioning. Searching for Pilewskis in Southern Poland, I came across Pilewskis in the district of Poznan. This finding is a mystery, because I never came across their descendants in Poland. The Poznan district in XIX century was under severe German rule, they persecuted Polish orientated people and degraded them as humans.
    Today in Germany exist three families of Pilewskis. They lost their identity to such extent, that some adopted new names, for example the maiden name of their German mother.
    These families being raised in a rapacious german culture lost contact with rest of their family, and considering these circumstances perhaps one should not wander. Below are archive details, perhaps one day they may be useful to them.

Simon could be a brother of Kazimierz or the least his cousin. 2 Year 1845 Joseph Pilewski age 27 weds Elisabeth Bysiak age 20 in Parish Gostyczyn. 3 Year 1824 Felix Pilewski age 41 weds Dorothea Beutlich age 28 in Parish of Rakoniewice.
4 Year 1824 Sebastianus Pilewski age 44 weds Francisce Janiesiekiewicz age 27 in Parish Leki Wielkie.
5 Year 1860 August Drozdzynski age 52 weds Eveline Pilewska age 32 Poznan, Evangelic Parish.

Pilewski Wilhelm born 20. 08. 1909, catholic, murdered in Auschwitz 04. 11. 1942. Lived in Neu-Sandez.


PILEWSKI IN DISTRICT OF KRAKOW

Since some time researching for Pilewski‘s in the Krakow area was unsuccessful. Perhaps there is somebody, living, that would help to trace them. They had invested a great deal of effort in Polands fight for independence. Below there is some information about them. 1 Pilewski Jan weds Zofia Klimas in Krakow year 1817.
2 Pilewski Henryk born in Hungary 15.08.1886 mother Reincz. Graduate of Vienna Politechnic, an engineer, specialist in the railway branch, from 01.02.1915 in Austrian Army. Enlisted in the Polish Army 01.11.1918 in his profession, first in the district of Krakow, later in the district of Lodz.
3 Pilewski Jozef born in Ukraine 15.03.1889, all around education, graduate Lvov University, masters in Pharmacy, doctor of Philosophy, in Austrian Army in August 1917,directed chemistry in Military Hospital in Lvov. Later from november 1918 in Polish Army in charge of military chemistry in Sambor.
4 Col. Pilewski Boleslaw in year 1932 was commander of 18 Brigade Light Artillery. !5 February 1919 was a prisoner of war with other Poles while serving in the Austrian Army, out of these Poles the 2-nd Brigade of Field Artillery in camp La Mandria di Chivasso near Torino in Italy was organized. That same year they were transferred into France near the town of Lure.
In June 1919 this Brigade arrived in Poland, and 7 of March 1920 was renamed as 18 Brigade of Field Artillery. When the First World War ended, Brigade was stationed in Ostrow Maz.
5 Pilewski Kazimierz and Julian Pilewski were murdered in Katyn, probably members of Pilewskis from Krakow district.


PILEWSKI IN USA

By the end of XIX century, there was a great wave of Pilewski‘s emigrating to USA. Families were getting rid of treasures to buy a ticket for youngsters to cross the Atlantic Ocean. They next were pulling their brothers, cousins and this resulted in a lot of Pilewskis settling in the USA. After the Second World War, some of them still maintained contact with their families in Poland. Recently it was found that, Joseph Pilewski of Brooklyn, New York enlisted in gen. Haller‘s Army, to fight for Polands independence. As yet we do not know much about him.

With the support of the Polish government, Polish partisans declared autonomy at Varviškes.They pretentiously referred to this village and its area as Varviškes Republic. A special commemorative postage stamp was issued and serves as testimony of the support of the Polish government for Varviškes partisans.

A powerful squad of partisans was organized (in fact they were soldiers in civilian clothes). Officer ?Chmura (Cloud) was in charge of it. His real name was Pilewski. Others claim that the estate owner Moravskis from the Kapèiamiestis area was the leader of the squad. The Lithuanian Encyclopedia says that H. Muellers signed as the supervisor of the autonomy, while chief lieutenant Pilewski-Chmura was only his assistant.
